Re-employment caution for members receiving a pension
Occasional teachers who are receiving an Ontario Teachers' Plan Pension, must carefully monitor the number of days they work. Failing to understand the restrictions can result in the loss of tens of thousands of dollars.
Although most folks casually refer to the '50 day rule', it would be more accurate to say 'the end of the month exceeding 50 days rule'. That doesn't roll off the tongue as well, but does helpfully suggest that the details are important and that OT members on pension have important choices. Pausing one's pension to take a full-time LTO of dream classes in the perfect school can make financial sense, especially if the last day of the LTO falls at the end of June. But oops!, teaching one extra class and losing the rest of the school year's pension would be devastating.
The OTPP has very clear explanations of re-employment rules. They must be read and reviewed very carefully because there are many details and scenarios. And it is worth going back to each year to make sure they've been properly understood. Don't rely on a quick explanation from a colleague.
Once you log in, you can see the number of days the OTPP has counted for you in the current year, but be careful! It won't include recent pay periods.
