Welcome to the brand new website for our Bargaining Unit! Please be patient as we continue to format and populate the website!
Occasional teachers in Ottawa-Carleton hold many different profiles.
For many, the beginning of their teaching career starts with occasional work, with the goal of moving on to a permanent contract position. Job opportunities fluctuate, but generally we have folx find their preferred employment status in 4-6 years. This varies based on qualifications and experience. They stay in the bargaining unit as they move through part-time contract status, but eventually leave the Bargaining Unit for our colleagues in the TBU. We hate to see you go, but we know leaving is your desired option!
For some, the flexibility of occasional work and the variety of assignments, without being tethered to one work site is desired. These are long-term casual members, who often have other work as artists, musicians, athletes or independent seasonal work. Because the school system relies on the availability of teacher coverage, these people are essential to the smooth operation of the entire system.
Finally, we have a fluid group of retirees, who often early in retirement enjoy the ability to continue the friendships and social contacts that school affords them. Most retirees reduce their work over time, and many leave entirely within 5-8 years. Retirees are limited in their ability to take work, and need to be counting the number of days they complete in order to protect their pension status.
Regardless of the demographic make-up, these OSSTF teacher members have issues and concerns that are unique to their precarious and always-changing work. Locally, the roster averages approximately 900 Occasional Teachers. Our 'full-time equivalency' is approximately 375 members.
Local services and representation for this group of OSSTF Occasional Teachers are provided by an elected Bargaining Unit executive of their peers. The areas of service include, but are not limited to collective bargaining, contract maintenance, political action, and professional development.
