Collective Agreement Language:
Article L4.02(a): Long Term Occasional Teacher means an Occasional Teacher who is employed for one period of ten (10) consecutive days or more as a replacement for one secondary teacher employed by the Employer, the "Qualifying Period"....
(b) For the purpose of establishing the Qualifying Period, a partial day (i.e. part-time assignment) shall be counted as one (1) day.
(c-f) ....
What this means:
If you are filling in for a teacher for 10 consecutive days or more, your daily OT assignments will turn into an LTO assignment, retroactive to the first day worked, and you will be paid on the LTO grid. Parts (c) to (f) give information about absences interrupting the 10 consecutive days. It is worthwhile to check in with the Admin in the building that they are aware of this status change. This rule also applies if the assignment is only for the partial timetable of the absent teacher, but for the same class consistently. It is important to check your ATE calendar that the proper assignment is posted.
It sometimes takes payroll 1 or 2 cycles to adjust the pay. Call the Union office if you are concerned that an assignment has not been processed correctly.
Example: As a daily OT, you would not attend a PD day as it is unpaid. If this PD day occurs in the middle of your consecutive assignments, it is not counted as one of those 10 days, but it also does not interrupt the consecutive nature of the days worked."
LTOs are required to attend PD/PA days, as it is considered a regular paid work day. If you are on a partial LTO, then you may wish to discuss how this partial FTE should be reflected in the PD days.
Federation PD Day: Usually occurring towards the beginning of the 2nd semester, this PD day is reserved for union-guided PD. The usual practice is for LTOs to attend the subject council PD with TBU members. Another option is to join an OTBU-sponsored PD event. Any questions should be directed to the Vice President - Educational Services. This is still considered a paid workday for LTOs, so you have a professional duty to be present at a PD event.
Postings are short - 3 days, so have a general cover letter ready that can be tailored to each posting.
Your QECO statement determines in which category (A1-A4) you are paid. Submit your application confirmation to the Board as you wait for processing. This will allow you to be paid retroactively.
LTOs that are 90 days or longer are eligible for benefits. You will receive enrollment information directly from OTIP. You have 31 days to enroll. This is a firm deadline.
